The Appalachian Trail is enormous. It spans over 2,200 miles and crosses 14 states. Millions of people hike on the trail each year, but only a select few thousand hikers complete the entire thing. These crazy people are called Thru Hikers. They prefer rocks, dirty roots, and sleepless nights over the comforts of modernity. Moss and leaves are their preferred blankets and a rotted log for their pillow. Bears and Deer are their neighbors. A 100 mile hike is but a brief stroll in the park for them. I have relied heavily on their input for this map.
But you don't have to hike the entire trail to love this inspiring path. Perhaps you've visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park and fell in love with the woods. Or maybe you live near trail. This map is for you.
My map captures a teaspoon of the magic that is the Appalachian Trail. I did not use AI to draw this map and you can see videos of me drawing it on my instagram.
